How to Choose Your First Electric Car

Electrification is a big step. We’ve driven conventional cars for over 100 years, so switching to an all-new one is a big step. Given the amount of money at stake, knowing what you’re getting yourself into is beneficial.

In 2021, more electric cars will be sold than ever before. The company’s share of all new vehicle registrations in December 2021 will be 25.5%, higher than ever before. There are currently around 370,000 electric vehicles on UK roads, and the number is increasing by the day.

We know that going from petrol or diesel to electric is a significant transition. We have helped many people achieve this and will continue to do so.

Here are some tips to help you transition to electric drive.

Pure electric or hybrid?

Electric cars come in many types. There are hybrids, plug-in hybrids and fully electric vehicles.

A hybrid or hybrid electric vehicle (HEV) has a petrol engine plus a small electric motor and battery. The engine charges the battery to increase the miles per gallon slightly.

A plug-in hybrid (PHEV) is half electric and half petrol. It has a larger battery and motor than an HEV but must be plugged in to charge to reduce fuel consumption fully.

An all-electric battery electric vehicle (BEV) is powered solely by an electric motor and battery. It needs to be recharged regularly and enables zero-emission operation. There are other types of powertrains, but mostly combinations of these three.

What range do you need?

Range anxiety is the number one concern for new electric vehicle buyers—the idea of running out of charge when you’re traveling and miles away from somewhere.

While the possibility does exist, there are so many charging points around that it would be incredibly rare you would run out of charge. But what you need to keep in your mind is that different cars have different ranges.

Take a long hard look at how many miles you do on average each day and at the weekends. Then choose a car that can do that distance comfortably.

Check reviews; lots of reviews.

Reviews are subjective in nature, but they provide a glimpse into the real story beyond marketing and clever copywriting. For this reason, we encourage you to read and browse as many reviews as possible. Compare all brands and models within your budget and check out as many sources as possible. The clearer your image, the more confident you will be in your decisions.

Take a test drive

We offer the same advice for electric vehicles as we do for any other car purchase. Test drive before you buy and spend as much time in the car as possible. Cars are more than stats, ranges and prices on the page. Our relationship with our cars is emotional and invisible, and we don’t truly understand it until we spend time with them. It would be even better if an electric car could be used by him for an hour or more or rented for the weekend. The more time you spend using it, the more you realize that electric motors are truly the future.
