Important Spring Car Maintenance Tips

Spring is the perfect time to take your car to your local auto repair shop to address the effects of cold, icy conditions and salt and sand on the roads before they become serious problems.

Here are a few tips for spring car maintenance

Change your oil and filters.

Regular oil and filter changes are essential to keep your engine healthy. Oil is important for picking up contaminants as it lubricates and cools the engine, but as the oil ages, it becomes less effective. Serious engine damage and reduced engine life may result.

Check your fluids.

Fluid checks go hand in hand with oil and filter changes. Check power steering, brakes, transmission, washer fluid and coolant. Top up any missing fluids and flush/replace as your vehicle’s owner’s manual recommends.

Tire maintenance.

Spring tire maintenance begins with the replacement of winter tires with regular tires. But it’s also important to check and maintain proper tire pressure, change tires every 10,000 km, and monitor tread wear. Tires are the only point of contact between your car and the road, so tire maintenance is very important.

Replace your wiper blades.

Wiper blades can take a beating in winter. Replacing it in the spring is recommended, as the onset of spring showers can reduce visibility.

Check your battery.

Cold temperatures put a strain on the battery. Springs are a great time to put them to the test and make sure they are securely attached. The connections are strong and free of corrosion. Batteries older than 5 years may need to be replaced.

Inspect your belts and hoses.

Subzero temperatures can harden and damage rubber. In the spring, checking all hoses and belts for damage is important. If you replace the belt, you may also need to replace the tensioner and pulleys to keep the new belt from slipping.

Check your lighting.

Inspecting all exterior and interior lighting is critical to staying safe on the road. Thorough cleaning of outdoor lighting is especially important. Defective or dirty lights can distract other drivers from your intention to stop or turn, resulting in a collision.

Like spring cleaning, spring maintenance is an important part of keeping your vehicle safe and performing at its peak for as long as possible. Call or visit your local Mufflerman today to prepare for the summer driving season.
