Why Is My Car Overheating? The Causes and Solutions

Your car engine is the most important part in the vehicle. That’s why having trouble with it can mean so many things that you don’t wish to hear.

There are so many things that could go wrong with the engine, even if you were taking care of your car and maintaining it regularly.

One of these problems could be engine overheating. And it’s an issue that you should deal with ASAP, and we’ll tell you why in this article.

Fear not! We have all the causes and the solutions that could save you the hassle of engine replacement and trouble on the road.

Why do engines overheat?

There are so many reasons to be honest. However, generally speaking it’s mostly related to cooling system problems and heat isn’t able to escape the engine compartment.

Let’s see what the cause could be:

Cooling system leak: This system is in charge of circulating coolant through hot zones around the engine block and cylinder heads and then back to the radiator.  If the coolant leas, then the engine will overheat.

The water pump is not working correctly: A car’s coolant system uses a water pump to push coolant around the working engine. So, when the water pump doesn’t work the correct way, it will disrupt the coolant flow and lead to overheating.

A problem with the radiator: The radiator is the most important part of the cooling system. A coolant and water mixture are constantly circulated from the radiator to the engine to absorb excess heat. Then, when the coolant returns to the radiator, it uses a series of fins to cool down the coolant and water mixture.

Going back to the radiator, blocked passages can cut off the flow of coolant, so heat can’t transfer away from the engine. Also, having a damaged or bent radiator can make it more difficult for the radiator to extract heat from the coolant. And finally, a leak in the radiator can drain the system of coolant as well.

Low engine oil levels: Engine oil provides essential lubrication to each engine component to reduce heat-generating friction. When engine oil levels are too low, poorly lubricated parts will create more friction and buildup heat.

Thermostat failure: The cooling system in your car relies on the thermostat near the engine to decide when to send coolant to regulate the engine’s heat.  So, if you have a malfunctioning thermostat, the entire system can be thrown out of balance.

What to do when your car begins to overheat?

The bottom line and before we give you anymore information; Make sure not to drive further when your car overheats. Pull over, stop driving, turn off the vehicle and let it cool down on it’s on.

Now, here are the steps you should follow:

Pull over and assess:

As soon as you notice an issue, just pull over and stop driving because otherwise you’ll damage the engine. Try to assess the situation and pinpoint the problem and if you couldn’t then call for help.

Keep moving, but only if necessary:

If you’re in a situation where you can’t stop, then keep the vehicle moving slowly, that will help keep a natural airflow around the motor to cool it down.

Turn on the heat!

When the car is still in motion, turning off the A/C and increasing the heat to high helps to pull additional heat from the engine.

Open the windows:

As simple as that! This way you can allow the heat to flow out of the vehicle.

Call of assistance:

If you are not experienced with such a problem, then just call for help either from a friend or a skilled mechanic.

Tips to prevent car from overheating

Here are some tips that could save you the trouble and help prevent the engine overheating problem:

1.       Check the vehicle coolant levels regularly.

2.       Store an extra bottle of water and antifreeze in the car trunk.

3.       Monitor the car’s thermostat as you’re driving.

4.       Check oil levels, and have it replaced on regular.

5.       Don’t overuse the car’s air conditioning on extremely hot days.

6.       Refer to the manual of the car to get an idea of what you can do.
